A Word to the Wise

Dr. Walter Olsen

Can one please the Lord without hating evil?

No! As one gets to know the Lord and His word, he will see that God is holy in all of His character and ways. That is, He is separated from all that is sinful and cannot look upon sin with any degree of approval. Yet, because of His love for humanity, He sent His Son to die for our sins that we may be forgiven and received by Him as His beloved children. King Solomon said, "The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth do I hate" (Prov. 8:13). Before salvation, evil is not much of a concern to one except as it touches him personally. When one becomes a child of God, he receives the life and character of God and thus he loves what God loves and hates what He hates. It cannot be otherwise. True, we still struggle with our unsanctified desires of the flesh, but when we truly know Christ as Savior, we begin to be conformed to His image and desires. Because God hates evil, the believer will hate evil. Thus the Apostle Paul urged believers, "Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good" (Rom. 12:9). Dr. Walter Olsen 2/23/15
