A Word to the Wise

Dr. Walter Olsen

Can a Christian be hopeful in a chaotic, sinful world?

Yes! Hope for the believer is not based on the conditions of the world or the promises of men. The believer’s hope is the result of his personal trust in Jesus Christ and all the promises of His word. We know, from the word of God, that this world about us is headed for destruction. God will bring judgment on all ungodliness. Nobody gets away with anything, though it may seem in this world that they do. The Christian has hope because he is able, by the grace and truth of God, to see beyond the present appearances of things. It is said of Moses, "By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing Him who is invisible" (Heb. 11:27). The hope of the believer is to look, by faith, beyond the sinful turbulence of the world about him. If one has his eyes upon the world about him, he will find no sure hope. He will see only chaos, deception, and ultimate loss. If he has his eye of faith on the Lord Jesus and His word, he will see a promising and glorious future, based not on the accomplishment of man, but on the Person and promises of God! Yes, the Christian has every reason to be hopeful in this life!
