A Word to the Wise

Dr. Walter Olsen

Is Christianity basically an internal or external reality?

Actually, it is both, but one comes before the other. If one seeks to live a Christian life by self effort or education alone, he will be greatly disappointed. Christianity is not the following of a form of religion but the expression of a life, the life of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. The Apostle Paul spoke of "...the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory" (Col. 1:27). Before seeking to live the Christian life, there must be a life to be lived! There must be the internal presence and reality of Christ. Thus the Apostle Peter said, "But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you..." (I Pet. 1:15). The external reality of Christianity is the works which follow our identification with Christ even as Paul expressed, "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works ..." (Eph. 2:10). Indeed, Christianity is both internal and external.
