A Word to the Wise

Dr. Walter Olsen

Does old age diminish one’s value or worth to God?

By no means! A believer who cannot do the things in service to God he did in times gone by is as much loved by God in his old age as ever before. God does not love us primarily because of what we can do for Him but for what He has done for us. He gave His Son to die for our sins and as we trust Him for such forgiveness, we are forever loved of God! Indeed, we are accepted and loved in His Son, the Lord Jesus. A believer never has to worry about being cast aside by God in this life. The Psalmist prayed, "Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth" (Psa 71: 9). Later he said, "I will go in the strength of the Lord God..." (Psa. 71:16). In the time of old age, the believer can continue to trust in and believe God for his continuing needs. While our needs may change with age and limitations, God never changes and is sufficient for every need. "Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need" (Heb. 4:16).
